AFM is an Activated Filter Media, manufactured and
activated by Dryden Aqua under ISO procedures to have a high
negative zeta potential and catalytic self sterilizing properties.
AFM is manufactured from reprocessed glass, but it is not
a basic crushed glass product. We have a basic crushed glass product
available for low end applications. AFM is a highly processed product
which has been tested by independent UK Government laboratories and the
water industry and has been certified safe for all water filtration
applications. Filter sand has by-passed the regulations because it
was in use before the regulations were in place. However man made
filtration products are not exempt, and AFM is the only filtration media
that is in compliance with the regulations and is safe to use. A
basic crushed glass product does not have the surface active properties,
there will be a hydraulic lenses effect which leads to channeling, there are
also serious health implications for the public and contractors from
using a basic crushed glass product.
Dryden Aqua have completed a 1.2 million Euro Research Project in co-ooperation

Dryden Aqua systems prevent respiratory disease and

Cryptosporidium
oocysts removed
Sand and activated carbon will always be subject to bacteria fouling,
coagulation and worm whole channeling, which provides a conduit for the
passage of oocysts. AFM is an Active media that resists biofouling and
channeling.

Three years of on-site trials prove AFM will remove 30% to 50% more
solids from the water than can be achieved using sand.DOC reduced,
chlorine chemical consumption reduced by approx 30%. Back-wash water
reduced by 50%, return in capital under 18 months.
Full scale tertiary treatment system goes on-line to treatment

Sewage Effluent Rapid Gravity Filters
Rapid gravity filtration system using AFM on a sewage treatment works Thames Water
Pilot scale test bed using a 0.5m diameter AFM pressure filter. Test bed water flowrate can be varied between 750 and 1,500
liters of water
per hour. Systems simulates a water flowrate of 3.75 and 7.5 cubm.hr-1.m2.
Aquaria
We do not agree with keeping Cetaceans in captivity.
When these beautiful animals are held in a chlorinated system
trichloramine produced by reaction between chlorine and ammonia, damages
their eyes and lungs. Dryden Aqua have discovered the mechanism of
trichloramine production, have provided a solution to this problem.
In marine aquaria the water treatment systems are biological, and no
chlorine is used. However it is very important to be able to provide the
best possible water quality for the fish. Dryden Aqua AFM and water
treatment systems, will double the visibility through the water and
provide a better water quality for the aquatic animals.

What is AFM
AFM is an activated filtration media manufactured by Dryden Aqua. In addition to the product applications and
process technology have been developed by Dryden Aqua.
AFM is engineered to have surface active properties of adsorption and catalysis as well as acting as a mechanical filtration media. AFM
is a great deal more than a recycled glass filter media.
AFM-plus
AFM-plus is a surface active open structure catalytic molecular
sieve will be available in 2007. It has up to 5 times the surface adsorption and catalytic activity as standard AFM. Performance will be
almost equivalent to activated carbon, and it will sterilise the water at the same time. The product is not consumed, a simple back-flush recharges the
bed. (Patent pending)

AFM in a simple pressure filter that has been used to treat sewage effluent. Note the waste on top of the bed, but the AFM is perfectly clean
below the surface with no signs of biofouling
AFM after it has been in a filter treating sewage effluent, absolutely no sign of biofouling.
Process design
AFM filtration media can be used like a standard sand filtration media. However the unique properties of AFM mean that the filtration system can
perform tasks that could not be considered using sand.
Sand filtration can provide a very high quality water, however when the process is used to treat waste water and industrial waste water, biofouling and
coagulation of the filter bed can cause serious operational problems. These problems are solved by using AFM. Indeed it is now better to filter
sewage effluent before the humus tank. Filtration at this stage prevents the release of prescribed chemicals into the water by the bacteria, and presents
the AFM filter with a larger bacterial floc to remove. High suspended solids loading is not a problem for AFM, but it is best kept below
300mg/l to minimize back-wash frequency
Detailed process design knowledge regarding the application of AFM is IPR protected by Dryden Aqua but is available to dealers and clients of Dryden
Aqua.
Flocculation
AFM can be used with all flocculent such as PAC, ferric and polyelectrolytes. Ozone can also be used as a flocculent is used at very low levels. To

Phosphate removal and catalysis
AFM makes an excellent filtration media for the removal of phosphate from waste water, when combined with ferric chloride or rare earth salts.

Edinburgh
Leisure's, policy is to use AFM in all their Swimming Pools.
Edinburgh Leisure is a leading leisure trust with a turnover of £18
million, 630 employees and over 3.3 million customers a year. To help
these customers stay active they manage swimming pool leisure
facilities for the City of Edinburgh Council.
- Ford Motor Company in the UK, Spain and Germany have conducted trials with AFM on process water and waste water treatment. The trials have been
successful and Ford Motors are now progressing with full scale AFM filtration media as opposed to using sand.

Activated sludge filtration
AFM filter was operated in a MLSS of 4000 mg/l and reduced the concentration to under 100mg/l on a single pass through the filter at a flowrate of 5
cubm.hr-1.m2
